Colleague Michael Corona added, “This is our biggest group yet—there are ten of us.” Part of Hebron’s growth in the tournament can be traced to Jenn Wales, an elementary school math specialist whose husband—Steven—is a member of AFSCME. The two unions, Hebron Education Association and AFSCME Local 1565, decided to join forces and come out in support of each other and public school children. “We all have kids,” said AFSCME Local 1565 President Mike Tuthill. “This is my first time participating in Hands Across the Green, and we’re definitely coming back next year.” “We have kids of our own,” said Wales, “and it touches us to help children in need. My husband has always been very involved in his union, and his involvement has brought light to how important our own union is to us, as teachers.” Over the past 24 years, Hands Across the Green has raised $700,000 for needy children in Connecticut’s public schools. “Everyone who plays or volunteers has a great time,” says Nicholas, “and we encourage all teachers and their friends to participate. It’s a day of fresh air and

Teachers Score for Students Teachers competed for overall scores as well as prizes in several categories, including closest to the pin and a putting contest, sponsored by California Casualty Auto and Home Insurance; long drive, sponsored by Wood- n-Tap; and a poker run, sponsored by Mohegan Sun. First place gross winners , with a score of 59, were the Frontier Employees Fund team of Don Karkos, Pete Foley, Mike Pinchera, and Nick Pericello. Second place (60) went to Joe Grodovich, Tony Butcher, Steve Gentino, and Tom Sharpe. Morgan Stanley/Graystone Consulting’s team of Chris Bolduc, Mike O’Brien, Francois Morin, and Mike Anastasio took third (61). First place net winners , with a score of 52, were Scott Dufresne, Joe Czerbinski, Greg Callahan, and Sam Khatha. In second place (53 MC) were Stonington Education Association’s Michael Freeman, Art Howe, Billy Yuhas, and Scott Smilinich. Third place (53 MC) went to Hebron Education Association’s Tony Pitrone, Dave LeFevre, Steve Hurley, and Chris Lapsis. Winners of the long drive were Manchester Education Association’s Shawn McClory (men) and Michelle Mott (women), who was part of the Kent Education Association’s foursome. Closest to the pin went to Ledyard Education Association’s Fred Tremalgia, with 3'6" on the 3rd hole; AFSCME’s Steven Wales, with 2'6" on the 6th hole; Dan Lee, of the Education Association of Cheshire, with 6'8" on the 11th hole; and Southington Education Association’s John O’Neill, with 2'1" on the 18th hole.
