RETIRED TEACHERS ACTIVE IN SETTING POLICY, STRENGTHENING PROFESSION NEA RA presents opportunity for advisorship, advocacy, accolades

The Retired membership program protects teacher pensions and health care

In the lead-up to this year’s NEA Representative Assembly, CEA-Retired members connected with state and chapter leaders of CEA’s Aspiring Educators Program, continuing a tradition of helping Connecticut’s future educators. The groups met over dinner, where retired teachers provided support and encouragement and shared their expertise with Connecticut’s next generation of teachers. “Meeting with the enthusiastic Aspiring Educators is inspiring,” says former CEA-Retired President Gloria Brown, who now begins her term as vice president. “They remind us why we chose and loved teaching, and it’s a great opportunity for retired members to share their lifelong classroom experiences and knowledge with up-and-coming educators. They have many questions, and we are happy to help them prepare for their own classrooms.” CEA-Retired was also honored for strong communications with members, earning a First Place Spotlight Award among NEA-Retired state chapters for ongoing advocacy through the CEA Advisor . At the NEA-Retired Annual Meeting, retired members also learned how to safeguard their pension and health benefits, improve mentoring opportunities, and achieve legislative and political action goals. CEA-Retired President Gloria Brown, CEA President Jeff Leake, and CEA Aspiring Educators Chairperson Kathrine Grant meet at the NEA RA in Houston.
