TEACHER GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES MORE THAN $20K FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

The annual Hands Across the Green golf tournament, organized by CEA’s charitable arm—the Connecticut Education Foundation—raised $20,659 this year to benefit disadvantaged students throughout Connecticut. Canceled last year because of COVID and postponed twice this summer because of heavy rains and course conditions, the 26th annual golf tournament got underway at Glastonbury Hills Country Club on July 26, with 124 players in attendance. Golfers included CEA members representing Ashford, Avon, Bridgeport, Cheshire, Fairfield, Glastonbury, Hartland, Hebron, Madison, Manchester, Nonnewaug, Putnam, Regions 4 and 16, Shepaug Valley, South Windsor, Southington, Suffield, and Westbrook. “We had a full field of golfers— teachers from across the state, along with friends, business partners, and CEA staff—who were excited to be on the course again and raising money for students in need,” said Theresa McKeown, president of the

West Hartford Education Association, which sent a foursome to the tournament. This is McKeown’s sixth year participating in the annual event. Through the continued generosity of teachers, community members, and sponsors, Hands Across the Green has raised nearly $700,000 since its inception, with 100 percent of the funds going to help children in need. This year’s gold sponsors were Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Capital Wealth Advisors of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC. The pandemic meant more children than ever were in need of essentials, including clothing, eyeglasses and hearing aids, and school supplies. Teachers who identify students in need are able to request funds to purchase the necessary items—without which, children face significant obstacles to learning. Although the 2021 Hands Across the Green was limited in size due to COVID, a return to a full, double- shotgun tournament is planned for July 11, 2022.
