CEA PRESIDENTIAL AWARD CRITERIA Henry Barnard Memorial Award To be eligible for CEA’s Presidential Award—The Henry Barnard Memorial Award—a nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets three or more of the following criteria: • Promotes equal educational opportunities for students or educators • Promotes or implements affirmative action programs • Informs the public about human and civil rights and how these rights are secured • Combats discrimination in the hiring and retention of educators • Provides leadership in resolving social problems, particularly as they relate to individuals of Hispanic, Black, Asian, or Native American heritage • Protects and enhances the physical, mental, psychological, and emotional health of educators • Furthers an understanding and an appreciation of a multicultural society A nominee for the CEA Presidential Award need not be a member of the Connecticut Education Association. Final selection for the CEA Presidential Award will be made by the CEA president, based upon recommendations from the CEA Human and Civil Rights Commission. • Only members of the Connecticut Education Association may submit a nomination. • Only an individual member of the Connecticut Education Association is eligible to be nominated for an award (does not apply to CEA Presidential Award). • Nominations must be submitted for a specific award category. • An individual may not receive the award more than once in any ten-year period. An individual may not receive an award for any project for which he/she has been previously honored. • All nominations for awards must be submitted through CEA’s website, cea.org/ grants-and-awards . • Only one name may be submitted on a form. • Each nomination must be accompanied by (1) a rationale letter explaining how the nominee meets the criteria for the award, (2) a list of supporting materials, and (3) the supporting material, such as (but not limited photographs (of the nominee, trophies and/ or plaques), curriculum guides, scrapbooks, and video and audio files. • The CEA Human and Civil Rights Commission reserves the right to seek additional information. • Awards may or may not be given, depending on the recommendations of the Human and Civil Rights Commission and the approval of the CEA Board of Directors. The Connecticut Education Association reserves the right to give, or not to give, an award within any particular category. • To be eligible, the nomination and all supporting materials must be submitted to CEA no later than February 1, 2021. to) lesson plans, newspaper articles, newsletters, programs, certificates, Policies and procedures for nominations and selections

CEA HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS AWARDS CRITERIA Susan B. Anthony – Prudence Crandall Equality Award

• Works to further an understanding and an appreciation of the history of African Americans • Impacts the whole school or a significant portion of the community • Promotes equal opportunities for all people • Develops African American history instructional materials and/or multimedia programs • Collaborates with a group or groups concerned with African American rights CEA Award for Leadership in Hispanic Educational and Community Relationships To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets one or more of the following criteria: • Promotes equal employment opportunities for Hispanic educators • Promotes an appreciation of the achievements of Hispanic Americans • Fosters positive student attitudes toward Hispanic Americans • Promotes equal educational opportunities for Hispanic students • Develops Hispanic bilingual instructional material and/or multimedia programs CEA Humanitarian Award for Leadership in Recent Immigrant Educational and Community Relationships To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets one or more of the following criteria: • Provides relief efforts for recently arrived immigrants • Secures funds from local, state, or national sources to provide remedial educational assistance for recent immigrants • Increases public awareness about the plight of recent immigrants • Protects and advances the civil and human rights of recent immigrants • Develops bilingual or English-as-a-Second- Language instructional materials or multimedia programs Harvey Milk – Sylvia Rivera Award for Challenging Discrimination Related to Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation This award is given to those who work to promote the rights and concerns of the LGBTQ community. To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a communitywide, schoolwide, or individual program that meets one or more of the following criteria: • Furthers an understanding and an appreciation of the achievements of LGBTQ people • Combats discrimination related to sexual orientation or gender identity in the public school community • Promotes training for educators based on equity related to gender identity and sexual orientation • Enhances the lives of LGBTQ students and/or the children of LGBTQ parents

To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a program in a school or in the community that meets two or more of the following criteria: • Furthers an understanding and an appreciation of the achievements of women in history and society • Promotes gender equity training for educators • Promotes the elimination of racism and discriminatory attitudes and practices in education • Collaborates with groups concerned with human rights • Furthers an understanding of our multicultural society in a meaningful way Mahatma Gandhi – Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets two or more of the following criteria: • Promotes the study of peace education materials to develop positive attitudes among educators and students • Maintains cooperative links with other groups concerned with peace • Advocates the peaceful resolution of domestic and international conflicts • Promotes the study of conflict resolution without violence among educators and students • Secures funds from local, state, or national sources to promote peace education opportunities for students and educators Katherine Dunham Award To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets two or more of the following criteria: • Promotes an understanding and an appreciation of a multicultural society through the arts • Identifies and uses multicultural teaching materials • Brings the arts to inner-city students and integrates the arts into school curricula Helen Keller – Anne Sullivan Memorial Award To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets one or more of the following criteria: • Promotes and advances the human and civil rights of the disabled • Promotes equal education opportunities for the disabled • Aids the disabled in their school and community • Combats discrimination against the disabled in hiring practices John Rogers Memorial Award To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have developed or implemented a schoolwide or communitywide program that meets one or more of the following criteria:
